18/12/09 - Appeal for unwanted bikes
HART’S Safer Hart Partnership has launched an appeal for unwanted bicycles with re-usable parts as it prepares to launch its third ReCycling scheme in the New Year.
Under the scheme young people attend a series of workshops where they learn how to build and maintain a bicycle.
At the end of the workshops those taking part take a cycling proficiency test and those who complete the course are rewarded with the bicycle they have built themselves.
The project relies on the goodwill of the public in donating bicycles. These are then stripped and used for parts –while any that are not suitable are recycled for scrap metal.
Hart Cabinet Member for Partnerships, Cllr Nippy Singh, commented: “This project provides a practical means of educating and engaging these young people in positive outcomes and will encourage a healthy lifestyle.”
Anyone with a bicycle they would like to donate or who would like more information should contact David Lipscombe on 01252 774531 email david.lipscombe@hart.gov.uk.
Safer Hart is also looking for more volunteers to help with the project, which is run for two hours on a Saturday morning. If you know about bike maintenance and want to help out contact David.
