'ReCycling'
The principle aim of the project is to educate young people about the maintenance and safety of bicycles.
The ReCycling Project is a series of six week workshops for those selected to participate. The workshops focus upon sourcing a ‘raw’ bicycle, which is then repaired and rebuilt. These are donated by Hampshire Constabulary, or members of the public. Young and underprivileged persons are given priority to participate in the project due to the fact that upon completion, they will own a bicycle.
The project works with 11 – 17 year olds, and is staffed by Graham Holder, of local bike maintenance company Tregah Bikes.
The course ends with each young person completing a cycling proficiency test, before they are presented with their bicycle.
Some of the young persons targeted to engage with the project struggle with academic attendance and ability – this project provides a practical means of educating and engaging these young people in positive outcomes, and will encourage a healthy lifestyle.
The project will also teach young people to care for the environment, by actively encouraging recycling, and respect for property, by maintaining and repairing their equipment.
The first project took place in Spring 2009, with 3 young people riding off with their bikes.
